  • What are the qualifications for Head Start?

To qualify for the Head Start program, your child must be age 3 or 4 (or turn 5 years old after August 1, 2010) and your family must meet the federally-mandated income guidelines.  There is no longer a cut-off birth date for enrollment - children are eligible for Head Start services as soon as they turn three years old.  We encourage you to contact us for more information.

  • What areas do you serve?

Our center serves children and families from the city of Dexter and its surrounding communities.  Bus transportation is provided in Dexter, Bloomfield, and Essex.

  • What do I need to bring?

To enroll your child in our program, you will need to bring the following information:  

  • Child's birth certificate

  • Child's shot record

  • Medicaid, MC+ or other insurance card

  • Proof of Income (Copy of 2008 income tax papers)

Please have this information with you when you come to enroll.  Also, please note that all children enrolling in our program are required to have a physical and dental examination.  This will be explained in more detail when you apply.

  • Do I need an appointment?

An appointment is not necessary, feel free to come in anytime between 8:00am and 2:00pm, Monday through Friday.

  • How long does it take?

It takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour to fill out the required paperwork and enrollment packet, so please make sure you have ample time.  Also note that the center closes at 3:00, so if you are coming to enroll you should probably come by 2:00 at the latest.  If our business hours are not convenient for you to come in to enroll your child, please call us at (573) 624-8876 or send us an e-mail.  We will do our best to work with you.

  • What if I live outside of your service area?

If you live anywhere in the Southeast Missouri counties of Stoddard, Dunklin, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, or Scott, there is a DAEOC Head Start center close to you!  Staff members at any of these centers will be more than willing to speak to you.  Just choose the center that is closest to your area and give them a call!
